My name is Dan Simpson. I love to hike and to help others enjoy the sport! Since I live in Azusa, California, at the mouth of the San Gabriel Canyon, the San Gabriel Mountains / Angeles National Forest is my primary hiking venue. For more than a decade, it's been my pleasure to help thousands of hikers venture into the San Gabriels and beyond.

The heart of this website are write-ups for more than 70 hikes, mostly in the San Gabriel Mountains, but some also in Griffith Park, the Verdugo Mountains and Oahu, Hawaii. I also present a guide to waterfalls. I endeavor to provide clarity, accuracy, and completeness in order to give hikers the confidence that they can use my descriptions to hike safely, enjoyably, and successfully. My hiking blog primarily offers narratives of my various hikes while providing links back to the hike descriptions. My hiking Facebook community page provides a space to interact with other hikers and outdoor lovers and to get notifications on updates to my hiking website and blog, as well as events, news, forest closures, volunteer opportunities, and more.

I have greatly valued meeting many hikers, both via email and on the trail, who have expressed appreciation for Dan's Hiking Pages. I am gratified that I can help others to be enriched by venturing into the great outdoors and soaking in its beauty. Happy hiking!

Spring icon It's spring!
Spring is my favorite season to hike in Southern California. The rains have greened up the mountainsides, plants are coming to life, flowers are blooming, streams are flowing, temperatures are moderate, daylight increases, and there can be some wonderfully clear days. And as snow melts in the high country, the range of possible hikes increases.

icon And it's waterfall season! With record-low rainfall this year, the waterfalls might not be flowing for long, so hike to a waterfall soon.
Visit my Waterfalls in the San Gabriels to plan your hike.

Minding the seasons is an important practice for safely and enjoyably hiking in the San Gabriel Mountains. Read more here.

TRAIL CLOSURE: The Colby Fire, which began on January 16 and incinerated the mountainsides above Glendora and Azusa has caused the closure of Colby Trail and Garcia Trail until further notice. I will post updates as they become available. See my Colby Fire blog post.

USFS Forest Closure: The Station Fire of Sept. 2009 resulted in the closure of 294,317 acres of the Angeles National Forest. As of May 28, 2013, there are 46,194 acres of the forest still closed. Read more.

Books - There are several good guide books for hiking in Southern California. Read my reviews.
