CKE Say NO to Carl's Jr. and their sleazy TV ads!

Links
Update - May 2005: They're at it again! In November 2003, Carl's Jr. launched a series of sleazy ads featuring Playboy's Hugh Hefner and his Bunnies. I voiced my protest through letters, by boycotting, and in encouraging others to do the same. I was greatly disappointed with the response from Carl's Jr. Inc. They simply refused to admit the error of their ways. But the ads soon disappeared and for more than a year, Carl's behaved themselves. And I resumed my patronage to their restaurants.

But this week (5-22-05), I again was disheartened by the emergence of a new sexually provocative Carl's commercial aired on prime time featuring Paris Hilton. It's tag line: "That's hot."

So again, I ask you to join me in boycotting Carl's Jr. and expressing to them your objection to their raunchy advertising. I'll post more information as it unfolds. Meanwhile, below is what I posted previously.

November 2003: The trend of Carl's Jr. fast-food restaurants toward increasingly grungy ads has finally crossed the line with their new pitch man, porno icon Hugh Hefner.

The ad campaign, launched on November 3 by CKE Restaurants Inc., is themed "variety" and features Hefner and several Playboy Bunnies. The ad celebrates Hefner's "enjoyment of variety" — obviously alluding to his variety of sexual partners — as a plug for Carl's new line of Six Dollar Burgers. The title of the ad reads "Because Some Guys Don't Want the Same Thing Day After Day."

CKE Press Release
Read the justifcation for such advertising from the press release on the CKE website:
"The advertisements ... humorously allude to Hefner's enjoyment of variety and take an unexpected twist as he devours a Six Dollar Burger. ... 'Who better to deliver the message of variety than Hugh Hefner?' posed Andy Puzder, president and CEO of CKE Restaurants, Inc. 'We're appealing to an audience of young, hungry guys who expect a quality product but want to have something different from time to time. As a pop-icon, Hefner appeals to our target audience and credibly communicates our message of variety.'"
I am outraged at this blatant message glorifying sexual promiscuity. It attacks wholesome family values and degrades women as mere sex objects.

If you agree that this kind of advertising adds to the moral degradation of our society, I encourage you to let your voice be heard.

Here's what you can do:

1. Pray - Prayer does change things!

2. Contact Carl's Jr.
Carl's You can use the contact form on the CKE Inc website to send them a message: Contact Carl's Jr. (click the "Contact" tab) | Contact Hardees

Read my letter to CKE's chairman

3. Express your concerns with your local Carl's Jr. and Hardee's restaurants - And stop eating there and encourage other to do the same.

4. Spread the word - There's strength in numbers. Let's take a stand against the onslaught of sexual promiscuity and raunchy advertising.

Here's a sample letter provided by OneMillionMoms.com

Dear Mr. Puzder,

I am outraged that your company feels Hugh Hefner is an appropriate spokesman for your company.

This decision is an affront to every family in America that has been negatively touched by pornography.

Are you aware the type of pornography Mr. Hefner sells creates an environment of disrespect for, and devalues women? Are you also aware that 86% of rapists admit to the regular use of pornography?

I do not buy pornography, and I do not do business with companies that promote it. And, I'm telling my friends to stay away from your Hardee's and Carl's Jr. restaurants!
