Woman hiker rescued from icy slope

ANGELES NATIONAL FOREST -- A woman was rescued Sunday after she slid down a 300-foot icy chute in the Mount Hawkins area in the Angeles National Forest above Azusa.

Wendy Wert, 32, of Monrovia suffered serious injuries in the 2:40 p.m. fall, said Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputy Kirk Halladay.

Wert and three others were hiking a trail five miles southeast of Highway 39 at the Angeles Crest Highway when she slipped, Halladay said.

One of the hiking party called 911 from a cell phone and Los Angeles County firefighters and the sheriff's Mountain Search and Rescue Team were deployed to pick her up.

Wert was airlifted to a local hospital about an hour later.
